Learning Objectives
Students will be able to...
- Identify, research, and analyze community issues using credible online sources.
- Consider the roles individuals, groups, and government play and the actions each can take to address the community issue of choice.
- Distinguish between two types of public policy (action and regulation), explain the restrictions/benefits of each, evaluate real-life policy examples, and determine which best addresses the issue of choice.
- Identify and analyze strategies for building public awareness and support.
- Create an action campaign and predict the long-term effect of their proposed solution.
Overview
Local Solutions is a lesson-based civic action project you can do with your students right in the classroom! We've broken down the project into nine steps for middle school, with one lesson per step. Students examine the broad context of their issues—including the role of local and other levels of government—and focus on bringing about local change using strategies tailored to their individual issues. When done, students will have a completed action plan to address a community issue. Whether you ask students to take it beyond that is up to you!
