What kind of curriculum does iCivics offer school districts?
iCivics is currently in the process of piloting its U.S. History 1 core curriculum with select school districts across the country. iCivics’ U.S. History 1 curriculum is a core curriculum for eighth grade students that explores the story of the United States of America from 1580 to 1877. It is an inquiry-based curriculum built in collaboration with expert educators, historians, and practitioners from across the nation to develop deeper learning and civic reasoning. It is aligned with state standards, and districts and teachers can customize it to the needs of every state, community, and classroom. The curriculum is divided into 8 units. Each unit is designed to help students achieve mastery over an important topic in U.S. History so that they can understand the origins of and feel a connection with this country.
What is inquiry-based education?
iCivics values an inquiry approach to civic educationthat inspires students to learn by asking questions and seeking answers through the exploration of primary sources—including, but not limited to, the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution—that cover a broad array of experiences, contributions, and perspectives of the many groups that constitute American society. Importantly, an inquiry approach also makes room for students' voices, experiences, and perspectives.
What role does identity play in iCivics materials?
iCivics is committed to providing excellence in civic and history education for ALL students, ensuring that deep content knowledge and skill development are provided regardless of a student’s race, ethnicity, gender, or income level. Our materials do not advocate for students to develop a particular view about historical events, but rather present primary sources by which students can work to build a deeper understanding of historical periods and how our plural, yet shared, story came together.
How do iCivics materials ensure inclusiveness of all students?
Our materials are designed to meet students where they are, and they make space for teachers and learners to contribute from their own understanding and experience to productive conversation. They do this so that all students see themselves reflected in our history, and so students can develop a sense of pride and patriotism.
