Sarah DeWitt
Sarah DeWitt joined iCivics in June 2021 and serves as the Associate Director, Curriculum. She spent the first decade of her education career in classrooms, beginning as an elementary teacher working with brilliant, emergent bilingual fifth graders and later as a secondary social studies teacher co-conspiring with her high school history and AP Capstone students to make learning matter. Most recently, she enjoyed the privilege of teaching and learning alongside pre-service educators in her role as a social studies methods instructor at the University of Oklahoma.
Sarah graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oklahoma with a B.A. in history and women’s and gender studies and later with a M.Ed. in instructional leadership and academic curriculum. She focused her graduate studies and research on expanded notions of civic education and on how to create social studies learning environments that nurture and sustain the cultural and linguistic diversity of our students. Sarah credits her wonderful teachers, from early childhood through graduate school, for fostering her deep commitment to our democratic experiment. She is a champion for teachers and knows that they’re the real experts in this work.
When Sarah is not at work, she’s probably with her husband at the park pushing their toddlers on the swings. She resides in Oklahoma City.
