Emeka Barclay
Emeka joined the iCivics team as a Curriculum Associate in June 2023 after spending more than two decades in education. She has served as a teacher, a standards and curriculum writer, Dynamic Learning Project technology and learning coach, coordinator, diversity and equity trainer, district teacher leader, standards coach, dean of students, and other duties as assigned. She has also coached cheer, softball, track, and Greenpower racing. Her desire to be an educator stems from a long history of witnessing educators serve the community. Born and raised in Alabama, she would tag-along on adventures with her parents to vote and sit listening to the stories and teachings of local human rights heroes and heroines. The love of people and of learning instilled in her the belief that all children deserve equitable access to a quality education. Emeka, energized by Kofi Annan’s statement that “Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development,” volunteered to serve as a Court Appointed Juvenile Advocate and language tutor.
Emeka currently resides in Florida. In her spare time, you can find her enjoying copious amounts of coffee, reading histories and mysteries from the local library, writing and publishing poetry, or devotedly watching Miami football and Golden State basketball.
